My Personal Research Journey

I have chosen the topic of Social-Emotional Development as my topic for the simulation. I have chosen this topic because since my sudden entry into the field of Early Care and Education I have attended many training seminars and conferences and this topic seems to always be a topic choice at most trainings. I took several trainings on social-emotional development, which peaked my interest and enhanced my knowledge of the topic. I feel there are many parents and educators who do not understand the importance of healthy social-emotional development and I have a desire to gently nudge others into becoming aware of its importance.

I was (am) very apprehensive about this class because it definitely takes me out of my comfort zone. I am not knowledgeable in the area of research; and so often research uses lingo and terms of which I am not familiar and honestly, I get confused and frustrated. The amount of information in research papers is also overwhelming, however, last week we learned we did not have to understand the statistical information and that takes a huge burden off my shoulders.

Constructing the research chart is good because it helps me to focus on a couple of topics and really understand them better. Collaborating with colleagues is always an added benefit. We are able to share resources and support one another in this journey. I am happy to help in any way I am able and I definitely am open to any advice and tips from my colleagues.

Hi Crystal,
I also chose social-emotional development and more specifically, help infants/toddlers develop prosocial behaviors such as kindness, cooperation, empathy, sharing and self regulation. You mentioned that you found yourself suddenly in the field of early education... what brought you to this field? I ask because I first taught elementary education (3rd grade) before wanting to stay home with my children, so I owned/taught preschool for 6 years. I also owned a small scrapbook retail business. These opportunities led me to my current position directing a child development center for a hospital-based organization. This is a job that I never would have imagined doing, but I love it. Early childhood is very rewarding :).

Hello Crystal
I have to agree with you that this class is out of my comfort zone. However, I think the course is outlined in such a way that it gives us the tools we need to be successful each week. For instance I think we all found the article on how to read research articles very helpful. Like you, I also found the research chart extremely useful as it required me to actually take the time to understand what I am reading about. Don’t worry, we are all in the same position and we will support each other in any way we can. I have also chosen to focus on the social and emotional development of children. Have you thought of what sub topic you want to focus your research on? I will be sure to pass along any new resources I come across your way.
